Information from the 2/16/09 Inservice

PBIS Team minutes and next agenda:

3/4/09
In attendance Marta Pardee, Shawna Puustinen, Karen Doxey

Our last meeting was interrupted by looking for a lost child.

Attendance and sign in: There was no sign in sheet. We wondered what the status of our last meeting would be officially. Would like a little clarification regarding sign in sheets and extra duty pay.

Data:
The position is not filled and will not be until after Spring Break. The data has not been entered and will not be entered, creating a problem for our data collection. We want to bring this to Carmen’s attention to see if she has any solutions. During the playground meeting they need to discuss the process for referral so we are consistent with emailing the teacher and contacting the parent (review the process that Todd came up with and sent out). Right now the teachers are not being contacted when there is an incident on the playground.

Communication:
Shawna did not send out email about parking since the snow is in the way of the turn around. She will send an email asking staff to leave spots open for parents along the visitor parking row.

Kindergarten PLC discussed concerns with drop off and pick up. There have been several safety instances even with 4 adults in the area. They are willing to write up the lesson plan for it and communicate the plan to the parents. They would like to begin after conferences after they have had a chance to talk with parents about the plan.

Funding: We do have an account and the money from the parent group has been deposited, but the money from the energy savings has not been deposited.

Parent Community Connection: Tammy is not here today.

New reward ideas which came from the staff during the inservice:
Different dress up days
Student staff sport
Movie
Game Day
Play on the turf
Staff karaoke
Cross country/running
Poetry Aloud
Slalom run by the gym
Walk by the river
Cooking project/
Pizza with principal
Lunch with principal
We thought to have a theme day dress up for April and all building recess in May. Todd suggested a staff student basketball game for April via email since the meeting, so we’ll agree on that sometime in the next week.
In June we thought it would be good to host a picnic at lunch or maybe to go along with field day and invite families to participate as a PBIS celebration. We could add a special reward element if it seems necessary.
Since this month is short the target will be 750 bands.

We wondered if we could have some students come and count the bands or stage something so that the band counting was a bit more tangible and dramatic.

How do we review for after spring break? We would like to find a way that teachers are teaching the lesson plans? How would we figure out the time logistics?
One idea for the playground is to have the students by grade and have a rotation. It worked well last time to use the Enrichment time. We’ll assume that this will work again, but how will we catch the kindergarten students?
We thought we could put a sign up sheet up for when the commons is available for teachers, give them the commons lesson plan and have the expectation that they will reteach this area. We thought spring was a good time to get teachers familiar with the lesson plans for common areas because as we continue teachers will expected to conduct these lessons..
Hallways on your own.
We need to make this expectation clear to teachers. Shall we do this during the next staff meetings

Some suggestions:
Have the specialists come out into the hall during transitions.

Staff Reward for PBIS:
We discussed the idea of rewarding staff for supporting PBIS. After talking about what other schools do to reward individual teachers, we decided that for this year the PBIS team could simply show gratitude for teacher support by hosting a Root Beer Float reward at one staff meeting and a cookies and milk reward at another. We decided to do the root beer floats on _ (Shawna? Marta? I lost this part of my minutes).

End of the day Release for Buses:
We brainstormed ideas like having the students line up in the commons or at the end of a wing by bus and then having and adult (a specialist) walk them to the bus. There was a question about liability. There seems to be a notion about responsibility “from the threshold.” So the question is if we line students up and get them to the bus but a student does not make it onto the correct bus or chooses to not get on the bus, is the adult who walked them out to the bus any more liable than the teacher who releases them from the classroom with the expectation that they’ll get on the right bus safely? Or if a child falls on the way to the bus with and adult in charge is the school any more liable than the present system wherein they run out to the bus on their own? Being clear about the liability will impact the lesson plan about getting out to the bus.

January 28, 2009
PBIS
In attendance: Todd, Karen Fran (via telephone), Shawna, Mark, Marta

Talked with Fran about the referral form. We decided:
The definitions need to be back on the form
Level 3 instead of continuum, we will use the district discipline grid.

We asked if Power School could handle the data needs for our discipline referrals. Todd will ask Carmen if he and Tammi can have one day to look at Power School and then create the form to match the data entry needs. Dillingham is using Power School now.
Mark checked. There is a discipline log in Power School and Jay can help us modify those so that we can modify. Dave Newton seems to be working on the same thing. Todd will contact him.

We may want to add more check off boxes like for location and interventions (what have you already tried?) We may we also sub bullets under the behavior descriptors.

Reports
Communication:
We have 3 paraeducators signed up for the inservice.
We need to check with Renouf about the display case. We are going to turn it into the beaver lodge.

Money: Account is not set up. Lisa seems to believe she can use what she has now and then with reconcile. We don’t know if the PTO or the Energy prize money has been transferred to us.

PJs and Pancakes:
Marta has one parent who will volunteer. Staff has responded well to requests for help. Ben will set up the tables so that all 18 tables will be in the commons. When kids are done they can go outside. Shawna will send out an email to the staff about the breakfast.

More Bus Problems:
There have been more parent reports of problems on the bus. Todd will ask if someone from the bus barn could come to one of our meetings after the inservice.

Other
What happens when students are part of BASE? We need to figure out how to interact with BASE. Todd will ask Bobi Jo from BASE to come to one of our meetings to explain to us what the SBS staff is trying to do this year?

January 21, 20009

In attendance: Todd, Shawna, Marta, Mark, Karen

Shawna:
Template for posters in staff room as well as email telling people about them.
Carol Taylor possibility for the parent position

Funding:
We still expect to receive 250 from the parent group. Marta will double check with Lisa about having an account set up.

Checklist for PBIS
We completed a checklist form for Stone Soup. We did as much as we could. Todd will look at the action plan part and draft. Will bring it to the next meeting.

Discipline Referrals and Levels of Behavior

We discussed whether or not there should be a consistent way to contact parents when an incident occurs. We acknowledged this is a problem and we don’t know how to address it at this time.

There is still a problem with the time between an incident occurs and the teacher We wondered if the referrals could be on the computer and then emailed to the teacher as soon as it is filled out. When we do the section at the inservice we need to know who is responsible for completing the form.
One problem is that the nurse has students who are injured and she puts in her log but it does not get out to teachers. Also that playground supervisors don’t feel as though they have time to complete referral forms. We also need clarification about the incident report and how they relate to the discipline referral.

Todd would like our comments about the draft referral form and the levels of behavior.

February Inservice
Todd gave us an agenda that looked good
Karen will draft working groups and bring it to the next meeting.
Need to clarify the attendance of the office staff.

PJs and Pancakes-
Friday the 30th.
Shawna will ask the staff for griddles.
We will serve pancakes from 9:00 – 9:30 on this day. We need:
pancake mix
syrup
forks
plates

Fran’s Visit

Thursday February 12th – Fran will here. We will have our meeting that night. Perhaps we should have dinner and make it a 2 hour meeting. We will meet at Mi Casa

Product Book
Has our notes, data etc. The purpose of this is to keep things in one place all the information in order to pass it on to the next people.

NCLB Conference
Karen shared about SESA site.

Classroom
Karen will provide classroom template and will combine with forms that Todd and Shawna received and we will give those to teachers as the.

Bus Safety
The biggest problem seems to be having kids enter. We need to create a lesson plan for the bus area. We also need to contact maintenance and ask them to keep snow from the area. Todd, Shawna, Marta, Karen will go out there and observe over the next week.

Teacher Comment:
Please put bands in the box and the Beaver Sightings Form in boxes.
The last assembly was too long. It was suggested that we have an alternate room for kids who can’t handle assembly.

Decided: All of our activities should be 40 minutes.

National Conference
We would like to have Marta attend. It is the last 3 days of spring break. We’d also like to look at having Tammi go,.

Our Agenda for Next Week:
Bus Safety Lesson Plan
PJ and Pancakes
Getting our sections ready for inservice.

Spending:
We decided that we will have spending items approved by the team.

Bands
The loose little bands seem to be fine, the kids seem to be able to

Beaver Sightings:
Shawna asked that we all check the Beaver sighting box and put the forms up on the bulletin board.

January 8, 2009

1/8/09

PBIS
In attendance: Shawna, Marta, Tammi, Mark, Todd, Karen, Carrie
December data:

  • playground 21
  • classroom 16
  • other 4

By student: the one with the most referrals had not been on the frequent flyer list before. Todd thought the child was being referred to BASE, but apparently the parents did not follow through with the referral. Right now it’s the school behavior plan that is in session. The student will be referred for SCOTs right away.

Disorderly Conduct 20
Assault and Fighting 6
Bullying 6
Consequences; 5 discussions, 19 withheld recesses, 8 Out of School Suspensions, 4 In School Suspensions.

Staff (more than 3) Landingham, Wicks, Pardee and Puustinen
Do we want to eliminate this section? Let’s keep it for now. Todd is having regular playground meetings with the supervisors

Inservice
We thought it might work to break the staff into small groups and have them rotate through so that each topic is covered in small groups. The topics we thought could be covered

Plenary Session about why PBIS, increasing positive interactions, consistent ways to correct and Booster club (1/2 day), followed by small group sessions in:

  • The New Referral Form (understanding levels of behavior at Riverbend) (Todd)
  • Beaver Behavior Booster Club (Shawna and Marta)
  • Increasing positive interactions with students in your classroom (Karen)
  • Consistent ways to correct students (this will be tied to the Referral form) (Fran)
  • Data – share the data, how is it used, how does your referral form help with the data (Tammi & Mark).
Times for Inservice:
8:45 – 11:45
11:45 – 1:00 Lunch
1:00 – 4:15 Breakout Sessions (30 minutes per each)

Thursday before the inservice Fran will:
  • meet with Todd and Carmen
  • the playground staff
  • meet with us during our after school time (we will move the Wednesday meeting).

We have had some success in terms of common places and with individual students. We have not done much for teachers in the classroom

A topic for discussion – how do we develop the parent/community connection?

Beaver Honors and New Goal:
Ideas:
Staff Talent Show or Staff Karaoke (February)
Books for Breakfast or just breakfast (or donuts/hot chocolate)
Or Wing Ding – School Thing where there is an activity in each
Pajama and Pancakes Day- 750 Beaver Bands – the last Wednesday (30th)
Book Character Day
School Wide capture the Flag

Communication – What would that mean other than going to staff. Ideas from PBIS:
Provide adequate information
Share data once per month for staff
Keep parents informed (like through newsletter)
The Communication person is in charge of facilitating the communication discussion.

It was suggested that we create a brochure for parents.

Funding:
Approved $250 from PTO, but haven’t received
We did get the $500 from winning the conservation award.

Parent Community Connection:
Right now Carrie is learning about PBIS. Some ideas for this position:
Contact reporters when we do an event
Submit something to newsletter
Report during PTO meetings
Mark will set up an email account for Carrie.

Product Book
Next Agenda:
Topics for discussion with Fran while she is here
What do other schools do for school wide positive rewards?
Team checklist
Inservice
Pajamas/Pancake day

November 25, 2008
PBIS Meeting Tuesday November 25th
In attendance: Shawna, Todd, Karen, Marta and Mark

Todd reported that monthly playground meetings are taking place and asked for ideas for this upcoming meeting. Tami indicated the playground supervisors had a list for the meeting as well so thought the time may be taken up. One suggestion was to try to focus on a strategy (like having kids leave an area) then report back on that strategy the following meeting, pick another strategy to focus on etc.

One issue that came up was that children see all adults equally but we don’t know how paraeducators handle situations on the playground. An idea that came up and was accepted was that playground supervisors should wear a bright vest so that children, staff and parents can readily spot them on the playground.

Apparently Carmen is poised to enforce a “no toys” policy due to problems with a certain toy. As the PBIS, we would Todd to ask her to not make a blanket policy as many toys are not problems and when there are problems it is an opportunity to teach problem solving skills. Todd will take this thought from the PBIS to Carmen.

We thought we should survey the staff to determine their perceptions about the playground in general.

Lunchroom: Todd will retrain a few classes that seem to need it during his Life Skills time. Shawna wondered if Kindergarten children are given enough time to eat. We did mention that this has been brought up every year by parents – but usually Kindergarten students who want to eat, do so. Tami thought there were some instances wherein Ben accidentally let the Kindergarten students out too early and will clear that up with him. Some students are coming in to the lunchroom from the playground to “tag” other students and try to get them to leave the lunchroom to join the game outside.

We (the staff) are getting lacksadasical about handing out bands. Todd was going to send a communication to the staff that says PBIS is noticeably working and its success has been noticed by parents – however for it to continue to work the ADULTS need to keep up the good work of noticing positive behavior and handing out bands.

Our next meeting, we will discuss:
Any issues or topics for Todd and Shawna to look for at Anchorage conference
Staff/Student Soccer game award assembly
Retraining students after the Winter Break

November 4, 2008

1) Data: Look at our data for September and October. Discuss a plan if needed (ie: what can we do to bring down the referrals in the middle of the week)

Wednesday and Thursday are high referral days. The team will spend time keeping eyes and ears focused on why we have referrals more at mid week vs beginning/end of the week. We will bring the info that we collect to the next meeting.
One student (L.L.) had 9 referrals in Sept. and Oct. He will be a target in November for better behavior on the playground. Wicks will work with Dihle and the classroom teacher for a plan for this student.
A student (M.O) had 4 referrals in October – Liza will check on Sped Ed. to see what happened in pre-school. Dihle will schedule a Behavior Team meeting with this student’s teacher.
A student (J.R.) had 4 referrals in Ocotber – Todd will discuss with his teacher before making any plan.

Playground – continue to work with lessons on the playground and see if the numbers stay low. Review in Dec.

2) Harvest Carnival: Debrief
It went excellent – it was noted that the students were very well behaved and that they like interacting with staff in positive ways.

3) UAA Credits
Todd will send the info for getting 1 UAA credit for being on the PBIS team.

4) Leadership Training in Anchorage Dec, 8 – 9
Who will we send? Stone Soup wants an administrator and team member. Can we send Todd as our administrator? Todd will call and talk to Fran.

5) Other
None

Next Agenda (Nov. 18)

Discuss data we are collecting on mid-week referrals.
Discuss hosting Fran to Juneau for an in-service day.

October 1, 2008

Whistle Problem - We need a good signal for each grade. We just need two different sounds. Every class only needs to learn one sound. How would be a positive way to get kids to come in?
Your either a horn or a whistle at lunch time. The bear drill alarm is different. Todd will teach the classes their signal this week!

The recess was wonderful. We had a minor problem of not informing the office and having radios with some adults. Ideas:
Staff/student basketball game
Harvest Carnival - We decided to try the harvest carnival.

Marta will go to the PTO meeting to ask about money for bands and will explain PBIS to the parents. We will stick with whole building rewards for now.

We need some professional looking signs for the playgrounds, hallways etc.

Tami and Karen outlined each area and will send those to Todd with the PBIS language so he can put them into lesson plans.

The hallways have been going really well – the kids are practicing the hallway behavior.
Do we need to reteach the lunchroom lessons? Maybe for the younger kids. Todd will reteach K/1.
Do we need to kick some of the kids out that are taking a long time to finish lunch? Karen will email Patti Bippus and ask about possible volunteers.

Webeinair – who will participate?

Next week agenda:
Logistics of playground roundup.

Shawna is our PR Person.
